Liangmai

 Liangmai history

                                                          Liangmai village’s life
Liangmai village view

Natural beauty of Liangmai villages

I was eager to know the nature of social community, gender, aesthetics and so-called matriarchal societies. And moving toward the natural beauty this is the place where you can find endless green fields, rivers, chirping birds & animal, emerald trees & mountain one after another. Liangmai villages are surrounded by  natural beauty,  pleasant climate and its rich culture are the primary features of Liangmai village life.
In olden days Liangmai community are fond of living in hills station, there are many reason behind that, at this point of time I would like to highlight few thing which keep knocking in my mind, to have a better position to fight against enemy, easy to hunt for animals, agricultural economy, fountain water, better climate etc. In olden days people like Liangmai never think about development but they always concern about their own safety, self benefit like ‘hand to mouth’. When you look at the present scenario of Liangmai villages, more than 80% of the villages still live in hills station. When the innocent Liangmai people come to know about what is development like road, transportation, communication channel. They all gear up to shatter down in plane area, but most of the plane land has given away to other tribes like kuki by our innocent great grandfather. Till date many Liangmai villages are far away from vehicle link road, electricity, network service, medical facilities etc………………….
Here let have a deep talk about the living standards or lifestyle of Liangmai villages. Some years back during my holiday I had a good time to observed my beloved Liangmai people in few Liangmai villages like Rianglong, Tamah, and Konphung etc, and I tried to put myself in the shoe of those people but I found to be inbalance, lot of challenge, moment of fun and at last I prove myself in balancing egg. Everyone is busy in their own life as if ‘Who care other’ but in reality they love and concern for one another; 99% of the population are depend on agriculture resource and it becomes the most importance aspect of village life, people spend most of their time in the agriculture work. It becomes part of tradition & culture in Liangmai society. Here the funny picture come into wrong place, even the government servant who live in villages spend most of their time in agriculture job, hardly they spare out their precious time for their professional job like attending school. My reader please don’t take me wrong when i mention about govt employee, in fact they seem to be in wrong track. One of the very memorable moment that i came across during my journey to Liangmai villages is that people are busy in hunting food to feed their own family only very few people make a plan about their future. The whole six days of the week will be busy like an ant and they have their week off only on Sunday. Every Sunday 99.9% of Liangmai community observe Sunday by worshiping God. Though they have their own schedules to go to church, but many villages have similar timing of worshiping like devotion service in morning, children bible class in afternoon, and combined revival service in the evening. Here come to very funny part that very few people will not go to church and will take rest @ home as a part of Sunday. Sunday also become day of joyfulness by visiting friends place, will pluck fruits & eat together, when the evening come many people will be going to their friend’s house holding plate and curry packed with banana leaf (tasang gan) on other hand, to have a common evening feast. When the Monday comes every one will catch up their usual routine.

Liangmai foods have very unique feature comparing to rest of the world, let get into our delicious food but make sure that you don’t produce saliva, hehe control yourself. In order to avoid your saliva, firstly let me jump into veg food usually cook by Liangmai mother like bamboo shoot, yam, bean, tomato, green leaf, and also I would like to mention few name in my own local dialect like Tasang, Njengsang, Nkhiangki,Tatubon, Mariuki. Coming to non veg food people are very fond of having local meat like chicken, pork, beef, dog-meat etc. Other than that many people will run to the jungle to hunt for very delicious non veg food like brown deer, wild pig, ochre deer, monkey, elephant, tiger (if they found), fish (place like barak, agaki, ahangki, njaduiki), birds, and crabs etc. Apart from all this staple food of the Liangmai is rice. The animal skins are used for making a shield, decoration, sit and drum. Sometimes the meat like legs, skin, flesh and big bones are smoke dried and preserved to eat later on. Many people preserve animal fat to put in their curries which increase its taste. In olden day women are advice not to eat meat belongs to cat family like tiger, leopard and eagle too.
Before Christianity Rice beer is a very common drink where you can find in every house hold. It has two types of drink kachijou and jouchang It is hygienically prepared in a desirable way which is nutritive in content. Liangmai traditional drinks can be categorized as general drinks, festival drinks, harvest drinks, and feast drinks.
The costumes worn by people in the villages of Liangmai are one of the most attractive and distinctive ones. Most of the attractive costumes are part of the rich culture. The traditional dresses of women in Liangmai villages are basically a length of cloth that is worn around the waist and worn with a top or shirt. Liangmai women are very talented in weaving shawls, bags, and shirts etc. In each cloth you will find different color and symbol which indicate different meaning.
The educational aspect of village life in liangmai area is quite impressive according to their living standard. The villagers get educated in both their traditional education as well as the modern education not exactly. There are few government primary schools that have been established in the villages to provide primary education. Apart from that, there are many private organizations who providing basic education to the villager.
Fair and festival are one of the major parts of villages life. The villager celebrate a variety of fair and festival throughout the year and the festival are full of color and lights. The people also perform different type of folk music and dance during the festival. The most popular tribal fair and festival celebrated in the Liangmai villages was Chaga Gadi, usually happen on 30th October of every year. The most interesting feature of Liangmai villager was their simplicity, innocent and the people live in unison and enjoy all the festivals happen in their native village.
People are free from caste system, habitually the Liangmai villager manifest a deep loyalty to their villages. A rustic family who has their roots deeply seated in a particular village does not easily move to other part. The uniqueness of the Liangmai village life lies in deep loyalty which is again marked with a rich culture.
Liangmai Villager have common platform in the entire fields which indicates the symbol of their unity like- village pond, grazing grounds, cemeteries, churches, schools, waiting sit, wells, and wastelands. Christianity in village life provides a sense of unity among residents of a village. Typically, each village recognizes our mighty God as their protector, village protector and creator of the world, and villager unite in every Sunday to worship Him. Every one gives contribution in their own capacity for constructing Churches and Church offices. Some of the prominent Christian festivals are Christmas, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Father Day, Mother Day, Youth Day and New Year. Especially during Christmas season people from villages will go to nearby town or city to purchase cloths for their family member and people staying outside (like students, Govt employee, business men) will be moving to their native place for celebration. Once of the imagine thing that you can see is their local buses will be overloaded with passenger and goods, more numbers of people will be on top of the bus, let me add few words in my dialect “San sa thu bo Tamei/Tening bus”. Very interesting incident what you can expect from villager during festival season is that right after the morning service people will be having informal invitation by pulling your shirt for feast. The entertainment part of celebrations involves singing, dancing, drama and joking.
The villagers are expert in cultivating a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. They cultivate the crops round the year. Liangmai villages are found both in Nagaland and Manipur. The villages in different states are famous for producing different types of crops. The main crops are rice, millet, maize and pulses. Cash crops like sugarcane and potato are also booming in present days. Coffee, cardamom and tea are grown as plantation crops in Liangmai areas. Oil seed is also an important crop. Principal crops are yams, millet, maize, potatoes and sugarcane. Vegetable crops are melon, cucumbers, spinach leaf, mustard, onion, chilies, carrots, tomatoes, brinjal etc. I don’t feel coming out from my story about unique ethnic ofLiangmai villages life but time is running short and writer is running out for hunting another interesting topic. Author is looking for another opportunity to jump into this topic if the time permit later on. In my conclusion I would like to say that Liangmai villager are very innocent, friendly with people and they are very fond of natural beauty. The food and traditional attires are still maintained to preserve our attractive and rich culture. Social institutions like schools and Churches play a major role in maintaining our culture such as unity, cooperation, love and care for one another. Liangmai villages celebrate its traditional and Christian festivals with full of joy. Therefore, village life of Liangmai are blessed with its purity, innocence and uncomplicated saga makes the villages as the quaint, archaic, mystic yet charming places to rediscover nature.
